Low E string notes

To learn the notes on the bass string you should just learn the ‘pure’ notes A, B, C, D, E, F & G. As long as you remember ‘BE HAPPY’ (B & E don’t have sharps) then finding the sharp notes is easy. Likewise if you remember ‘Football Club’ (F & C don’t have flats) then finding the flat notes is easy.

One way of doing this is to learn where A is on the bass string first. This splits the string into two parts so it’s easier to look for notes starting from A (up the string forwards or down the string backwards) rather than starting from E and going all the way up the string to find other notes.

The motivation for doing this is so that you can find any note on the fretboard. To do this you can use ‘finding the OCTAVE’ of the note on the Bass string to give you the name of the note.

With practice you can ‘see’ the OCTAVES without placing your finger on the strings.
